By now you should know how awesome it is to take a vacation to Tamarindo, Costa Rica. This town has something for everyone, from luxury accommodations to hostels, from relaxation on the beach, to exciting activities like surfing and ATV tours.
But if you’ve come for a visit and you don’t have a car, that’s no reason to stay in Tamarindo for your whole trip. The Avellanas Express bus is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to explore the breathtaking beaches that are both north and south of Tamarindo.
Let’s take some time right here to explore these beaches so you can see what’s out there.
Avellanas is the most popular stop on the bus line, just 25 minutes south of Tamarindo. This beach has something for everyone. For surfing, there aren’t many beaches that are better. There are surf breaks up and down the beach, allowing surfers of all skill levels a shot at catching and surfing awesome waves.
There is space on the bus if you want to bring your own board, or you can rent a board right here at Neptuno and take it along. If you’re not into surfing, there is plenty of empty beach for you to find a spot and sun yourself on the sand.
One of the biggest attractions of Avellanas is Lola’s restaurant. Sitting right on the beach, Lola’s is a fantastic outdoor restaurant that offers great food at reasonable prices. Be sure to try the Seared Ahi Tuna Salad and the Dutch Fries, two of my personal favorites.
And while you’re there, don’t forget to say hi to Lola herself, the giant pig after which the eatery is named!
Just a few minutes north of Tamarindo will take you to Playa Conchal, which is a very unique beach. Unfortunately, there are no waves for surfing here, but it still has lots to offer. Conchal is a very interesting beach, in that it’s made of a mixture of white sand and crushed seashells!
The water line is also really awesome. You can sit right there and let the water wash up to your chest, and then right back out to the ocean in short quick waves. It feels like you’re sitting in a beautiful, natural washing machine!
If you’re into swimming in the ocean, this is the beach for you. Conchal is one of the best local beaches for swimming and snorkeling.
Playa Negra is the furthest stop away from Tamarindo, and it is a surfers dream! Famous for it rocky reef break barrels, this surf spot is for skilled surfers only. If you’re a beginner, you may find yourself a bit in over your head.
This beach offers plenty for non-surfers as well. This is a unique beach with dark sand, and is a great destination if you want to get away from the high-season tourist crowds in Tamarindo. It’s takes a little longer to get there (about 40 mins), but it’s well worth the wait.
The Avellanas Express bus will get you to all of these amazing beaches at an affordable price. The bus service is running every day, so visit Neptuno Surf Shop for schedules, prices and to book your ticket. And don’t forget to bring your smile. You’re gonna need it!
